Our 2003 Pet Lover's Star Search Grand Prize winner is:

Costello

Although Costello's human tells us he is a bit camera-shy, Costello's face now adorns a rubber stamp in our 2004 pet lover's rubber stamp catalog. Costello is reportedly a mischievous fellow despite his sweet disposition - and sweet face. Costello is 6 months old. Congratulations to Costello and his proud family! You can buy Costello's rubber stamp on our hedgehog page.

Our 2003 Pet Lover's Star Search

First Place Winners are (in alphabetical order):
April, Danny, Hayley, Hammy, and Punky!

April, First Place Winner - 7 years old. Her proud human describes her as "Daddy's little girl" and tells us she enjoys going for rides in the car, and snoozing in her favorite spot on the couch. She also apparently has her humans wrapped around her adorable little paw. See April's rubber stamp here.

Danny, First Place Winner - 8 weeks old; Danny's human tells us: "He has been just a super joy and love; his tail wagging wildly to greet us and he loves to make us laugh....We love Danny and couldn't imagine the house without him. Danny is a toy poodle. See Danny's rubber stamp here.

Hammy, First Place Winner - 10 year's old; Hammy's adoring human tells us that he is a "tough old man" who has survived a number of trials, including surgery to remove part of one ear after suffering a bite wound that became infected (this might explain his love of big floppy hats). He is a free roam ferret, even though he is blind and not as active as he used to be. Sources in the know tell us that Hammy's lovingly indulged humans are permitted to sleep in the same bed with him (though he probably hogs the covers) and that he wouldn't have it any other way.See Hammy's rubber stamp here.

YES, there are five first place winner this year... as it was impossible to stop at three. It was almost impossible to stop at five! So, last in our alphabetical list - but NOT least in any way: our fourth and fifth first place winners:

Hayley , first place winner - 2 years old. One of a set of "triplets", Hayley's name comes from the three little pig's story - she is named for the pig in the house made of hay. Her human tells us she is a pig with plenty of attitude. She loves carrots and kale and enjoys a quick cuddle in her human's lap before scurrying away for more play with her mom and the "girls". See Hayley's rubber stamp here.

Punky, first place winner - 3 years old. Her human tells us, "Punky is VERY spunky and her name fits her perfectly. She thinks she is a person and will try to do whatever I do. She gets into everything and keeps me on my toes." Though she has two hedgie-sisters, Punky tries very hard to be an "only child." See Punky's rubber stamp here.

Our 2003 Pet Lover's Star Search

Honorable Mention (these are just a few of the pets whose most precious of faces made our choice so difficult this year), in no particular order.

Boo Bear and Ms. Bronda - Boo Bear is five years old
and Ms. Bronda is three. This beloved pair of sugar gliders reportedly love to use their human as a climbing "tree."

Dewalt - 2 years old. Dewalt was rescued from a state in which hedgehogs are illegal when he was about one years old. He had never been named or touched by his previous owner. It took nine months of loving care from his new humans before he lost enough excess weight to be able to roll up in a ball. Now almost one year later he finally puts his quills down, has stopped biting, and lets his loving humans see his adorable little face. His human says Dewalt is the love of her life. We think Dewalt and his human both are very lucky to have found each other.

Perchance - 6 1/2 years old (7 months in photo)
Perchance's human tells us that when she was adopted from the Humane Society she was affection-starved and couldn't get enough love or attention. Fortunately, love was not in short supply in her new home. Perchance loves to "help" around the house. Especially when it comes to gift wrapping and flower arranging. She also likes to "fit" herself into new spaces.

Romie - 7 years old
Adopted from a no-kill shelter three years ago by his human and his canine companion Truman, Romie is quite vocal about his love for his adopted family. Romie personally offers the following explanation for his photo above, "Here I am in my favorite hat..... a fez. Sometimes I like to be a party boy, and wearing a fez just seems like a good idea. Hopefully one day I'll own a convertible so I can drive it around while wearing my fez!."

Sissy - 5 years old
According to her humans, Sissy is an energetic pup who follows them around the house constantly, loves to play fetch and swim in the pool. She is a wanderer and doesn't let small things like the 7 foot block wall or a closed doggie door keep her from sharing the hospitality of neighbors. She prides herself on being a "master of escape" and is AKA houdini. In her spare time, Sissy collects shoes, sandals, socks, dog bones, and other assorted items which she stores in a hole she crafted herself in a secret location. She said she could tell us where it is, but then she'd have to add us to the collection. We declined her offer.

Sweet Pea - 6 1/2 years old
Sweet Pea was given up by her previous owner when she was already 4 1/2 years old - which is pretty old for a hedgehog. She also had some health issues at that time. Unfortunately, tbis meant potential adoptive families were very scarce. Luckily, Sweet Pea's loving and generous foster Mom was up to the task and able to give her the forever home she deserved. According to her Mom, Sweet Pea is "the sweetest, happiest hedgehog" she has ever known.

Thank you so much to everyone who participated in our 2003 pet lover's star search - whether by sending in a beloved photo of your pet or by voting for your favorite pic. You have all made our star search both fruitful and exciting.

Our choice was VERY DIFFICULT. Nearly every entry had some overwhelmingly charming quality. In fact, there were so many utterly captivating photos and delightful stories, that we ended up with a FIVE way tie for first place - when we had originally planned for only three. Unfortunately, we were limited to one grand prize and FIVE first prize winners - even though many were deserving. In fact, next year we will be redesigning the judging and prize categories to accomodate more winners. It is just too hard to whittle it down to a handful of winners when the entrants are so deserving.

We also chose 6 entries for honorable mention - though we would have liked to have chosen many many more for recognition.

All pet photos have been resized to fit this page; many have also been cropped and a few have been digitally enhanced in other ways - to better suit this page and our purposes. Our judges made their choice based on the original photos as submitted; many factors were considered.

All decisions are final. Prize packages have been shipped out to the winners. Rubber stamps of our winners are now available!
